Each city has its own special history and legend. The village located on the border of Scotland with England is no exception.
What attracts this small village to the crowds of tourists?
The history of Gretna Green becoming a famous place dates back to the 18th century. In those distant times, the village became a lifeline for couples in love who wanted to tie the knot before reaching adulthood.
The fact is that in England laws on marriage were tightened.
According to these rules:
young people who were less than 21 years old had to buy a marriage license,
they could not get married without the permission of their parents,
witnesses must have been present at the wedding ceremony
In Scotland, there were completely different, simpler rules for lovers who wanted to get married before the age of 21. A small village, Gretna Green, was located on the border of England and Scotland. Therefore, underage young people ran here to get married.
In Gretna Green, a couple of 12-14 years old could be married without parental permission.

The ceremony was conducted by the Blacksmith, who was the head of the community. His blacksmith stood in the center of the village, at the intersection of five roads. Kuznetsov, in this regard, was called the "Priests of the Anvil". The anvil itself has become a symbol of love and marriages concluded in this place. It is said that a blacksmith, marrying a couple near an anvil, forged a union of lovers.
Later, in the 19th century, the rules of marriage changed somewhat in Scotland. But still, this place has always remained a favorite place for lovers, a place where a very large number of marriages take place.
There is still an anvil in the village, which attracts the attention of tourists. And also a lot of souvenirs with this symbol are produced.
